Coalition Student Organizations
Students for Sustainability
“Our environmental movement must broaden its definition of ‘sustainability’ if we want to solve the climate catastrophe. This coalition of students values the intersection of social justice and environmental issues and believes one issue can’t be addressed without thinking of another. This intersectionality is the driving force of “Climate Justice.” We are not going to be able to reverse or mitigate the effects of climate change without also advocating for gender equality, racial justice, LGBTQ+ issues, immigrant rights, dignity of workers, etc. We are stronger when we fight together.”
monarchs on the hilltop
"We care about climate justice because we care about protecting human rights. Climate change is a global human rights issue that threatens our agriculture, water supply, and health. Our climate refugee communities already demonstrate the devastation climate change brings. Thus, we join this coalition to address this crisis and take action towards a more sustainable future."
Its on us
“Here is a It's On Us supports the Coalition for climate justice because we believe that climate justice is social justice, if we can have sustainable and holistic relationship with the natural world we can improve the quality of life for all. The mission of It’s On Us is ending sexual assault and this work is similar to the movement of climate justice, because both these movements come from a place of anti-oppression work. It’s On Us realizes that situations of violence, conflict and instability have the worst rates of sexual assault, and Climate Change will only result in more climate refugees and lack of resources. We believe that by fighting climate change we can tackle many other social issues in society and we hope that our University will take the initiative to be a leader in clean energy and other forms of sustainability.”
AmericaIwill
"AmericaIWill is a social justice organization focused on empowering students that they are large enough of an impact to make a change in their community, which is why we are so interested in this rally. We believe that with every singular person who commits to helping the planet can ultimately make a difference, so we are committed to the cause!"
globemed
"GlobeMed cares about climate justice because we are committed to the growth and well-being of our partner organization Asociación Tierra, in Nicaragua, a country vulnerable to the effects of climate change. A part of our mission is sustainability so we strive for long term solutions to health disparities. We believe climate change is not only a threat to the environment, but is also a threat to global health due to the issues it creates.”
pi sigma alpha—political science honor society
"The Political Science Honor Society consists of over 20 members who all agree that climate justice and sustainability are something this university need to better address. We as an organization are concerned about the future of this school that has taught us so much, we believe now is the time for organizations like ours to push the University to be better for its current students, future students and the environment.”
sorin oak
"Words written stay on their page. Sentences spoken exist in their air. Our actions exist the same. It's crucial we understand, in the same way we write, we create our own narrative. Within that, we can shape it the way we'd like to see it. Let's create a world the way we'd want to write about it - let's make it something to share.”
Black Student Alliance
“Climate change is something that affects every living thing on this earth. Irregardless of race, class, gender, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation climate change does not discriminate. This issue is not something that our generation can forgot like previous generations. The time is now. Climate change is not going away; we have to stand united and heal the world together.”
Hilltop views Editorial staff
“Climate change is happening. As a culture, we have moved past the frivolous debate on whether to accept what scientists have been so clearly telling us about the impact we’ve had on our planet. Now, with time running out, we must change the way we use this planet’s resources and begin a new, sustainable relationship with the environment. For this reason, the Hilltop Views Editorial Board is proud to join the Coalition for Climate Justice in pushing St. Edward’s University to change its environmental practices and become a more sustainable campus.”
New literati
“Because writing and art are mediums of expression, it is common that they highlight social and political issues. New Literati’s goal is to be a platform that is open to showcasing author’s and artist’s work on any subject, including climate justice. As an organization that works to not only convey the intentions of creator’s work, but also connect them with an audience, it is our responsibility to take a vested interest in topics that impact our local and global communities.”
aiesec
"AIESEC promotes cultural understanding not only to avoid conflict, but to foster cooperation between young leaders from all over the world for the purpose of working towards sustainability. We recognize the all-encompassing nature regarding the health of our environment and that is why we stand for climate justice."
Cabra
“At Cabra, we are concerned with more than just fashion and trends. Social justice is a part of our mission as an organization, and we believe climate change is an issue that affects every person on this planet. We even did a piece on sustainability in fashion in our Fall 2016 edition. We believe addressing climate change starts in our communities, and that it is a social justice issue. Since social justice a pillar of the St. Edward’s mission, we believe it is essential that the university make concerted efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Cross country and track team
“The St. Edwards Cross Country and Track teams with over 40 members see the environment as an instrumental part of our everyday life, and believe it needs to be cared for in order for us to do what we love each day. This university need to address climate justice and sustainability in order to foster an environment where future generations of students can also pursue what they are passionate about. This opportunity most not be usurped from the students coming after us because we are not doing all we have the power to do right now.”
St. edward’s rock climbing team
"We here at the climbing team hold an acute sense of guardianship over the environment. By virtue of what we do, our sport relies on and fosters a deep appreciation for the natural world. This, by extension, informs our existence within it. Climbing is admittedly a secondary focus for us; the primary aim of any such outdoor endeavor is more subtly motivated by achieving a spiritual connection with Nature. It just so happens that this bond is, for some, felt most strongly while hanging somewhat desperately from a cliff. Many of the world religions speak and strive for unity between man with the Divine or Almighty, yet for us there is no distinction. Our fleshly bodies are no different than the solid rock to which we cling. All are derived from and inevitably return to the same deified Nature, and it is our duty to live in accordance with this fact. This understanding rightly informs our sense of stewardship, both to the world and the institutions we create within it. We urge you, esteemed administration, to one day soon rope up and grab a handful of limestone—then perhaps you’ll understand what must be done.”
